Dr. Yaa Asantewaa Nzingha is an award-winning activist, lecturer, educator and actress.
She graduated from Central State University and continued her studies at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee and Columbia University. She is the proud recipient of an honorary doctorate degree from Harvest Christian University.
Yaa Asantewaa is a contributing author to the bestselling book, Should America Pay? Slavery and the Raging Debate on Reparations and The Osiris Papers: Reflections of The Life and Writings of Dr. Frances Cress Welsing.
She is a recipient of the prestigious Audelco Lead Actress Award along with numerous awards from community and national organizations recognizing her activist work and instructional technique. Yaa Asantewaa was compelled to use her theatre experience to educate youth too often characterized as “trouble”. Her profound teaching techniques raised consciousness, self-esteem and test scores to record highs leading to her appointment as a professor at Medgar Evers College where she taught, trained and counseled educators on affectively teaching urban youth. She was awarded a New York state proclamation acknowledging her Outstanding Educational Leadership.
Dr. Nzingha’s lectures and work have taken her to numerous cities throughout the United States, Canada, England, Italy, Asia, Cuba, Puerto Rico and numerous countries in Africa, including South Africa where she was a delegate to the 2001 United Nations World Conference Against Racism. In addition to her international work, Yaa Asantewaa headed up the educational component of the District of Columbia Reparations Research Team.
As an extension of her work in activism and education she founded and generated funds for “The Mattress Project” after visiting Nyenga Hospital for women in Jinga, Uganda and witnessing the immense need for proper bedding.
Presently, Dr. Nzingha's attention is focused on working for the release of US held political prisoners, many who have been incarcerated 30/40 years.
